Native from Ethiopia, coffee is a national obsession. The coffee ceremony is an essential element of Ethiopian hospitality and is a complex ritual. Every house has its coffee set ceremony. First, freshly cut grass has to be scattered on the ground. The host is sitting on small seat in front of charcoal fire on which beans are roasted. Guests are invited to smell the smoke before the beans are ground up.
Tips
If someone invites you to coffee at home, be aware it will takes at least few hours. Don't accept invitation if you are in hurry.
Good to know
Traditonal coffee is served with popcorn. When available, herb (t'ena adam)can be put into the coffee cup which gives a little aniseed taste.
